How much longer can I do this?

I really, really, hate being a hospital nurse! Although the posters, campaigns, billboards, siminars, etc. all claim that's it's all about giving the best care to patients, it's not at all. It's about making the numbers look good--doesn't matter if it's really reflective of the care given---it's all about the paper! I am so sick of being stuck in the middle---the patient's complain, the families complain, the doctors complain, management complains, administration complains--and you know who's always the one at fault, don't you? The nurse, of course! Everyday I work, there's one more thing the nurses have been told they have to do--yesterday it was how to enter charges into the computer--should this really be my responsibility--does this really add to the "Quality Care " I can give my patients? Hell, no--just one more thing to add to the list--one more thing that takes us away from the actual care of the patient. And, for god's sake you better do it! One of the latest things that has been made an issue is documenting the percentage of food eaten by each of your patients for each meal (no, it doesn't matter that the patient may only order a fruit cup for dinner and eats it all--that's 100%--or, like one of my patient's yesterday--ordered two trays of food and ate all of it--that's also 100%)---BUT--anything less than 100% documentation was acceptable! No matter that you might have one patient having chest pain, another requiring every 15 minute checks of a bleeding cardiac cath site, a doctor who needs his hand held while he looks at his charts, a supervisor telling you you have to make phone calls and find someone to cover the call you you just had for the shift that starts in 2 hours, an irate family member because the doctor hasn't made rounds yet and is demanding that you page him and ask when he will be there, another doctor wanting you to play go between with another doctor--"you ask him (this), then call me back and tell me what he says", etc. etc, etc-------no MATTER--you need to get on that computer and chart how much the two tray a meal patient ate------and SO many other little things that have to be documented--it's all about the paper. This job literally makes me sick, makes me hate people--don't think those are great things to say about your job--------
